Ceramic Disc Voids
Application Note 2187
Disc Voids
Sample & Method

A high-performance ceramic disk having a thickness of 9.53 mm (0.375 inches) and a diameter of 20.3 mm (0.8 inches).  The disk was scanned per VRM and the data file saved. The images and analysis reported here are from the data file. To make the three images shown above, return signals in the data file were gated at depths of 2.95 mm (left), 3.50 mm (center) and 4.05 mm (right). Red areas are the voids.

Result

The voids become larger with depth.  Images above the depths shown here also revealed scattered small voids.  The irregular dark regions away from the voids in the images above may be clusters of very small voids (i.e., porosity).
