Acoustic Impedance Polarity Detector (AIPD)™
Mechanical properties of materials are measured by their acoustic impedance (Z) values. At an interface between materials, an ultrasound pulse (I) splits into reflected (R) and transmitted (T) portions. The larger the impedance difference across an interface, the larger the echo amplitude and the greater the image contrast. Some echoes have inverted (negative) polarity, an important indicator of delaminations, cracks and voids. Sonoscan’s advanced Acoustic Impedance Polarity Detector (AIPD)™ reliably detects delaminations as thin as 200 Angstroms.
